where's my SHIT
Saturday, April 27, 2002

OK, so i lost my cell phone three times in the past month, and my phone, keys, and wallet within 24 hours of each other. i think i'm going to start my 30th birthday resolution a year early and cut one of my vices...once i run out.

thanks to the Dragon bringing my spare keys from home, i was able to drive out of the east bay with my turntable and new needle at only a $10 cost (fuck off internet sites that were gonna charge me 3X as much! hurray soundwell and the neighboring electronics store.

i'm working too much. who knows if my ditsiness is from overwork, over partying, or inherent ditsiness. regardless, my frustration, tiredness, and overall grouchiness leaves me fed up with indie rock. it's time for some HARDCORE!

LES SAVY FAVorite
Thursday, April 25, 2002

Over the past two days, it seemed like everything was on my side.

The weather was fuckin’ amazing, I scored choice seating at the Castro for the Superchunk/Pages of Madness screening, Michael found street parking RIGHT IN FRONT of my house after helping me pick up the food for the party. And I was celebrated with flowers, future dinners, punk rock and media books, tasty cakes with butterflies and Robin (one half of the dynamic duo), and a photo from the 4/20 protest.

I extended the celebration by taking yesterday off. I had a great interview with someone active in the Civil Rights Movement and then spent time talking with Les Savy Fav out in a park. It’s great to hear the concept behind their amazing live show.

Even their press person seemed to know it was my birthday as I got guestlisted plus one. Meg accompanied me to a packed house that made dancing impossible. Unfortunately, the ratio of gawkers to participants was so low I couldn’t get into the vibe. More signs of getting old.

The LAST of the 20s
Monday, April 22, 2002

Well, tomorrow is my birthday. I usually get very nervous around my birthday (will people care?) but this year, I'm looking forward to it!

I've been so anti-social because of my huge workload of projects that tomorrow is a day that I can see my friends in a guilt-free social setting.

So I'm packing it all in: music, film, friends, and yummy Pakwan food. Hopefully my missing cellphone will turn up, too!

Punk Rock Bingo
Monday, April 22, 2002

I won two beers, a "Lorena Bobbit has a posse" sticker, and a John Woo mouse pad thanks to my bingo skills tonight. Drinks with old school punk rock and lots of girls, but not the kind that draw boys' attention, offered the punk rock bingo bootie, tonight.

In general, I'm grumpy, I'm tired, and emotionally raw. I'm over committed, under-partied, but overly socialized.

Music is a solace as I work on mixed tapes and look forward to spinning at Spunque next month, hoping that I can pull out the tunes that keeps the female punkers happy for my first dj gig...oh and with my birthday coming up, I finally get to see my friends!

Man, I'm in interview mode and it feels good. Interviews allow me the opportunity to hang with some of the more interesting and inspirational people I've heard of. They include:

Bill Sorro: a resident in the International Hotel and community organizer
Richard Aoki: Japanese American(!?) key player with the Black Panther Party
Shoshana Arai: who got involved with SNCC when she was only 13! and
Les Savy Fav my favorite live show!

The band interview is for Virgil's show, Burn My Eye. The activist interviews are for a project a team of us are working on, SNAPSHOTS OF ASIAN AMERICA: the Movement's Spirit and Legacy, soon to be revealed on our website.

Windy City Wind Down

Yes, I took Chi-town by storm and had a much needed vacation from the scurry of San Francisco. Some highlights inlcude:

* The Chicago Asian American Showcase: meeting great film folks, partying with the hearty, and gathering some great tape from the adventures.
* Quimby's Queer Store for zines
* Marigold Bowl for 24 hour bowling and a late night manager appropriately named "Weed"
* Art Institute of Chicago (stupid we, only had an hour and a half to try and see all four floors. rushed past european christian inspired paintings and ancient armor, absorbed the impressionism and contemporary work, in time to take in the crowded ansel adams photos. completely missed the street photos in the basement, damn!)
* and big ups to Tim Hugh, festival director, for his mid-west hospitality! While I didn't see any live music in Chicago, Tim sent me home with a dozen bootlegs from Chicago shows he's been to...after staying out 'til 8 a.m. partying with the filmmakers and returning to work by 4 p.m.

This festival has much love. Do attend if you're in the area.
